In reply to my query I received the following message, which doesn't address the origin of the expression but does give an example of its extended use.  (I here omit the name of the person who wrote to me):

"I, too, have been curious about the origin of this expression,
particularly since I made & carried a sign in our local peace demos
which said "DIE FOR OIL? LET GEORGE DO IT!"  (It got a lot of
appreciative honks & waves.)"
