Early texting?

It's a good find and one I'll keep to share with others, but it's not
texting any more than hollering down a mine shaft is telephoning.

To text means to send character-based messages via a telephone or
computer over an electronic network, the same way to telephone means
to call and converse with someone via the means of a telephone.
Without the medium and devices, you don't have telephoning or texting.
