Judge Milian:

"When did you discover that you had been scammed [by the used-car dealer]?"

Forty-ish, black male speaker:

"When I showed the paperwork to my wife. She asked why I had two
contracts, one for $4500.00 [the agreed-upon price of the car] and
another for $3870.00 [for made-up charges like dealer-prep, loan fees,
bank charges, etc.]. I looked and then I saw that I had _went for the
okey-doke_."

I was glad to hear that this bit of slang has passed down to another
generation. For a while, there, I was afraid that the expression was
going to die with me.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die"---a strange complaint to
come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
