OT: language origin and creationism

This seems to me to be the key, in this and other matters of teaching.  Students don't need to believe, but they do need to understand why others believe.  English majors don't have to like Shakespeare/Henry James/Faulkner, but they ought to be willing to understand why other people do.  English majors who take a biology course can believe with Ben Jonson that all disease is caused by an imbalance of the four humours, but they need to show that they understand why modern medicine believes otherwise.

One of the difficulties in this sort of debate is the posture "if you can't prove that I'm wrong, then I must be right".

Another difficulty is the posture that evolution and creationism must be taught as of equal value, which in practice will mean that evolution is to be scrutinized closely, but the religious position must be shown its proper respect.

A question: how do the bible literalists deal with the evidence that the earth may in fact not have four corners?
