"beyond the pall"

What is the type of error called that results in "beyond the pall"
stated instead of "beyond the pale"?  I can imagine someone thinking
of pall, n.1, "(fig.) something regarded as enveloping a situation
with an air of gloom, heaviness, or fear." (9.a).
