Senator William Henry Haywood (1801-1852, Senator from 1843 to 1846, D-NC)
resigned in 1846 rather than vote as instructed by the NC legislature. The
tariff bill would affect the UK as well the US. Haywood, in his explanation of
resigning, called the bills of 1844 and 1846 "as different as light is from
darkness."
