Interesting, about the toothpaste.  When I was in Vietnam 1966-1967, the
leading brand of it was a French (at least, originally) product, Hynos.  The
character on the billboards adverising it was a very dark skinned African
man, with oversized and prominent glistening white teeth, singing "Prenez,
prenez mon dentrifrice".
