"flight", verb intr.?

On another email list, someone referring to a Haitian colleague wrote
"Fortunately, he's alive and flighted yesterday to Canada."

An unusual employment of "to flight", intr.?  Why not "flew"? And
with an unfortunate -- or perhaps intended? -- association with
"fled" or "escaped"?
