In 1810 Isaiah Thomas (who became a printer's apprentice in 1756 and
later was a determined Patriot) wrote in his _History of Printing in America_:
1728, John Eliot,---"At the Great Elms,* South-End." was said to be
a descendant of the revered John Eliot ...
He published a few books, and was, many years, a bookseller and
binder ... being a respectable man, was made deacon of the church in
Hollis street,
* One of these Elms stood in the yard, fronting Eliot's house, and
was afterward called "The Tree of Liberty" ...
Volume 2, page 430-431.
