Without doing extensive research, I note that BOTH versions ("sighted"
vs. "saw") appeared in the newspapers in Jan. and Feb. 1942 ... and that
other details varied even this early ... and that I can't find the
message in 1941 or earlier (at a glance). Some Web sites claim the story
is unverified or bogus. I myself remember hearing this message (with
"sighted") being quoted casually ca. 1960.
