I, too, was in high school in 1950, but I knew that that pronunciation
was the "proper" one even before that. I don't recall when I first
heard "Key-HOE-tay," since I was long convinced that it had to be some
kind of mistake. It sounded so ridiculous that I tried to make it go
away by ignoring it.
