As a teenager I heard that _The Faerie Queene_ is the longest poem in the English language, so I undertook to read it.  A few stanzas into the first canto of the first book, I found the vile monster Error lying on "the durtie ground."  I remember thinking how much dirtier "durtie" looks than "dirty."
