on voice

I am aware that voice is considered to be an instrument, on par with
man-made objects that exude sound. And, I thought, the identifier "on
the vocals" has been fairly ordinary. Perhaps I missed it, but,
apparently, the current reference is "on voice", as in "The wonderful
Ms. X on voice", presented by a band leader. Or is it not that new and I
just failed to pay attention for the past 30 years?
