"Wife swapping" (of the adulterous kind) was a fully lexicalized core
concept by the mid '60s.
Now it seems so quaint, so sexist, so archaic, so uninspired.
(BTW, the 1886 ex. may refer to non-adulterous, sequential swapping.)
