more on _standard_ v. _slang_

I was surprised to not find anything on "dumb as an ashtray" in Lexis/Nexis
(even in the blogs it reports).  When I googled the phrase the first ones I
encountered were all about the Alice comment which is awfully close to slang
if not informal.  I need more evidence.
