Back before there existed major-league baseball teams in Georgia and Texas and Florida, the St. Louis Cardinals were frequently adopted as the "Southern" team to cheer for.

I don't know, but it seems reasonable that that would be the assumption
made by people who assume that the "peculiar institution" was peculiar to
the Deep South, as racism supposedly is, today. :-(
