The YBQ has 1985 for "I have the heart of a small boy.  I keep it in a jar on my desk." (Robert Bloch)
_San Francisco Chronicle_ 11/4/1945. "This World" sec, p 17, col 2"But I'm a very un-horrible person," Bloch protested.  "I have the heart of a small boy.  I keep it on my desk, in a jar."
This was from a review of Bloch's _Opener of the Way_ (published by Arkham House), so the quote may originate in that book.
