Bill Mullins asked: "Were there footnotes or sources for the quote?"
No footnotes. No source given. As presented, whether Tom Meany was among "Those writers who were closest to Ruth" who attempted to convince him not to hold out and who heard the quote is not made explicit, but, as it reads, several writers heard it. Before the quoted passage: "For once the newspapermen covering the Yankees were not sympathetic to Ruth's holdout demands." Many had had their pay cut.
In Tom Meany's Preface he thanks many people, including some reporters, including (though not necessarily present for the presumably 1932 quote) Arthur Mann of NY Evening World, Jim Kahn of NY Sun, Daniel M. Daniel of NY World-Telegram, and Fred Lieb of The Sporting News.
