But the brazen imagery powerfully conveys the theme of the opera and the director’s take on religious, cultural and national conflicts. In one episode, Cortez tries another tact and forces Montezuma into sex games. Trying to get herself (and Mexico?) out of this crisis, she endures this at first, before turning on Cortez with the aid of her sisterly comrades (Susanna Andersson and Marie-Ange Todorovitch).
