Although A Contract with God did not originate the term, it did popularize it.

CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED

OED cites Will Eisner's _A Contract with God_ title blurb for first citation. (1978)

The term had previously appeared on an obscure gothic romance comic book, _Sinister House of Secret Love_ #2 (dated Dec 1971/Jan 1972):

Wikipedia credits comics fan Richard Kyle with originating the term in an article in _CAPA-ALPHA_ #2 (Nov 1964). It is reprinted here:

"So, in future issues of Wonderworld, when you find me using the terms "graphic story" and "graphic novel" to describe the artistically serious "comic book strip," you'll know what I mean."
