1940 _Japan Times & Mail_ 19 Oct. 3/3 (Japan Times Archives)  Stress will be put on military training to prepare all students for their future role in the Army and Navy.  Accordingly, sports such as swimming, rowing, cycling, gymnastics, shooting, judo, kendo, karate and sumo will be made compulsory subjects along with the other school studies.
