It is alleged that the Boston Evening Post of 1765 May 13 has a satirical essay on James Otis entitled "Jemibullero", with the following:

"And Jemmy's in the CAUCUS and Jemmy's in the REPS"


The earliest spelling as "caucus" currently in the OED is 1788 (Gordon).
