--citing the ADS WOTY vote on "they", with shout-outs to Ben Zimmer and Anne Curzan, as well as the New Yorker profile of Jill Soloway touched on in this space a couple of weeks ago, and with some discussion of the other options Dennis Baron reminds us about periodically.  Seems like this is the kind of story that Times readers would be better informed about if only there were a regular weekly column on language in, say, the Magazine section...
