Barry shared more information on Muhammad Ali quotes with a few members of our listserv,
and Garson O'Toole commented on one of them. I now share the two messages with the entire listserv.

Barry,
Excellent work on the various sayings attributed to Ali.
You probably did not notice that I created an entry on the
turning-off-light joke in 2013. The analysis included an earlier 1917
citation.

"VOTE BLUE, NO MATTER WHO"

Probably a big political saying this week if Hillary Clinton wins enough Democratic delegates on Tuesday. This deserves more exposure than on my website and my Twitter, where no one will ever see it.

"So fast, I turned of the light in my hotel room and was in bed before it was dark."
Widely attributed (Yale Book of Quotations) to Satchel Paige talking about Cool Papa Bell's speed in the old Negro Leagues. It was old before Muhammad Ali ever said it. However, it's older still--Moran and Mack used it in vaudeville in 1919.

"Service is the rent we pay to live on this earth"
>From at least 1917. Muhammad Ali did say it in the 1970s after donating to a New York City charity (and helping a home stay open), but many people have said it. This has usually been in the Ali quote articles this week, even though I wrote this entry three years ago.

"If you even dream of beating me, you'd better wake up and apologize"
Ali did say this, from at least 1968.

There's been one "like" on Twitter for me on this, so there's that.

I have this from 1992, but Ali said a version of it? It's popular on gym posters, but the wording varies a lot.
