Definitely not the meaning retained by the time we get to The Big Lebowski.  Whatever we might say about The Dude who Abides, as realized by Jeff Bridges, it's that he does *not* show "an ostentatious regard for fashion and style", or at least not the regard observed by fops and dandies.
