Brits and other non-US English speakers like to use "went pear-shaped."
Don't know that I've ever heard it in the US, though I have noticed over the
last ten-fifteen years or so that Britishisms have been creeping into
US-speak.

Heard on an NCIS re-run a minute ago. About 118,000 hits. Definitions range
from the OD to the UD.
Clearly, I'm behind the curve, again.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die!"---a strange complaint to come
from the mouths of people who have had to live.
