I received a request to explore the saying in the subject line. Barry
Popik has a useful entry on the topic. His earliest match appeared in
"Reader's Digest" with an unknown month. The anecdote in "Reader's
Digest" said that a version of the saying was spoken in 1936.

Below is a citation in 1932. (Also, I determined that the "Reader's
Digest" citation appeared in April 1945.)
