The Yale Book of Quotations has the following:
It is the final proof of God's omnipotence that he need not exist in order to save us.
Peter De Vries, Mackerel Plaza ch. 1 (1958)

Subject: Quote: "God is so powerful...."
Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - I came across a memorable
line that went something like this:
"God is so powerful, he doesn't even have to exist to change our lives."
This site suggests that it, or something like it, appears in Carl Sagan's
_Contact_:

Just a quick note to say that The Atlantic has a review by Jason Bailey of the new Robert Zemeckis film, "Flight". Called "The big lie of 'flight': Miracles land plane...
Since I haven't read _Contact_, and only dimly recall the movie, I doubt
that's where I encountered it, though the time-frame is plausible.
