[Ads-l] Fixing email didn't work after all.

But how could one of my emails not be a pleasant surprise? Surely it's worth checking online, http://listserv.linguistlist.org/pipermail/ads-l/, where they are stored in ungarbled form!

Be that as it may, my experience is the opposite of Dennis's: Posts made on my iPad, like this one, seem to come through fine, while posts made via Outlook from my work desktop are subject to garbling, even if they are plain text.

I recently found a sort of fix, through trial and error. When I send mail to this list from Apple Mail, it's garbled on many people's screens, even when I compose directly in mail or using txt. But if I send mail through my university outlook webmail through my browser, using the plain text option, it seems to work a lot better (though I still see line break issues). I haven't tried doing this with the html option.

ADS is the only list of the half dozen that i follow that presents this problem for my messages. (I use apple mail for pretty much everything on my laptop, ipad, and iphone, but webmail does seem to make my ads messages decipherable to others). Because my apple mail automatically downloads ads-l messages to a separate folder, I don't read messages in webmail, and so i don't know if other people's messages that are garbled on apple mail appear normal on webmail.

i get the feeling that no one at listserv uga is doing anything to fix the problem.

I believe, it depends on the account OR the hardware and software people
use to send messages, OR BOTH, not how they send, via ADS-list, or else.
This is just a guess: I am not a computer geek.

For example, Bill Mullins sends messages from TWO different accounts:

(1) amcombill at HOTMAIL.COM<mailto:amcombill at HOTMAIL.COM> and (2) william.d.mullins18.civ at MAIL.MIL<mailto:william.d.mullins18.civ at MAIL.MIL>. The 1st
one is working normally (readable (;'-)))), but ALL messages from the 2nd
account always look exactly as showed in the example you provided -- like
some encrypted abracadabra.

While some of Bill's e-mails are readable, the completely different story
is with those, who have just ONE account, that produces the same kind of
abracadabra. I have 2 filters for my Inbox, that send messages from these
addresses *jbaker at stradley.com<mailto:jbaker at stradley.com>* <jbaker at stradley.com<mailto:jbaker at stradley.com>> and
*debaron at illinois.edu<mailto:debaron at illinois.edu>* <debaron at illinois.edu<mailto:debaron at illinois.edu>> directly to Trash. I always
check Trash before emptying it, and alas, I never had pleasant surprises
with messages from these addresses.

This e-mail is a natural product. The slight
variations in spelling and grammar enhance
its individual character and beauty and in no
way are to be considered flaws or defects.

Hmmm. Email thing didn't work after all (see below). Anyone else have an
idea? Again, it only happens with ADS-L emails.
