On June 4, CNBC published an article by Ari Levy titled "There's a new way for casual investors to get in on the cryptocurrency craze” in which initial coin offerings (ICOs) are discussed. Along the lines of an initial public offering (IPO), an ICO is when a new cryptocurrency becomes available.

Is the ICO a common thing? Perhaps many cryptocurrencies do not have one, but FWIW, Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptocurrencies <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptocurrencies>) claims there were 740 cryptocurrencies in 2016; coin marketcap.com (https://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/ <https://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/>) lists 866. There are doubtlessly many not listed and others that have gone bust.
