The analysis of the pancake in that article includes the sudden drop-offs
at the edges (the ends of the cross-section), as shown in Figure 4 (
http://www.usu.edu/geo/geomorph/kansas_files/kansas-4.gif). This
invalidates the entire comparison, as the influence of the thickness of the
pancake greatly outweighs the texture of the surface.
