CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED

In 2015 I submitted some cites for "frailing" (to 1959), a style of playing a banjo to the list (which cites, oddly enough, are not revealed by searching for "banjo" or "frailing" at the ADS-L search page).

The OED does not have this sense of "frail"; neither does it have the banjo sense of "clawhammer", an alternate name for this style of picking.

Danville VA _Danville Register_ 2 Sep 1962 p 9A col 4
"The producers of the record thoughtfully included an eight-page pamphlet which explains the mountain isolation of Carroll and Grayson counties, takes a fleeting look at the formerly all-agricultural economy of the area, traces the history of the traditional instruments -- including the fretless banjo played by the clawhammer method -- and tells a little about the performers and their offerings."

_San Bernardino County [CA] Sun_ 2 Apr 1966 p B14 col 7
"Clawhammer Banjo, Lightnin' Hopkins and Pete Seeger are featured on "Folk Music." "
