I think I became aware of the noun reading Cory Doctorow's 1998 short story
Craphound. Available here: http://www.spacewesterns.com/articles/57/. It is
set in the picker milieu in the Toronto area, and the both the title
character (a space alien) and the first person narrator are pickers.
