 When I was in college in the mid-sixties, students were issued a 'meal ticket' indicating that our meals/board had been pre-paid for the semester.  It was a wallet-sized card that we had to show to a worker as we passed through the cafeteria line for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  The worker had a list of meal ticket names and numbers and manually checked off the numbers as we passed through with our trays.
