The Quote Investigator website has a new entry about a gambling
anecdote with the punchline "Give the gentleman one white chip”.
Sometimes "blue chip" occurs instead of "white chip". The earliest
citation I have listed in the QI article is January 10, 1890, but I
believe it can be antedated.


Instances of the tale appear in "Thesaurus of Anecdotes" (1942) by
Edmund Fuller, "Try and Stop Me" (1944) by Bennett Cerf, and "American
Literary Anecdotes" (1992) by Robert Hendrickson
