"The Dictionary of Modern Proverbs" has an entry for:

A (true, good) friend walks in when (all) others walk out.

The first citation is dated 1994.

The QI website now has an entry for this family of sayings with a
precursor in 1916 and a match in 1924. Gossip columnist Walter
Winchell often receives credit. He did print it in a 1933 column, but
it was already in circulation.
