If we're going for an approximation of the native pronunciation, the vowel
of the first syllable doesn't exist in English, being very similar to
Russian ы, a kind of unrounded _u_, and _w_ becomes a _v_ only when
followed by a vowel in the course of declension or of rapid speech.
