1881 _Cincinnati Enquirer_ 1 Sept. 2/4 (Newspapers.com)  The Buffalos ... opened the first inning with three singles and two triples.

NOTE:  The OED entry has an 1880 citation, but I believe that that citation is an adjectival use rather than a noun.
