Yep. And re: John Lighter's response re: "lead pencil," there was a nice
segment on Grant's show recently about the use of "pencil colors" (IIRC)
in LA, instead of the more typical "colored pencils."
In the period, I'm not sure if there was a terminological
distinction/disambiguation between a metal pen and a quill pen in
Anglo-Saxon/Old English.
