[Ads-l] Can anybody help me place this diphthongization in the American South?

Southern diphthongized pronunciation of [æ]  so that it sounds like [ai]?  I was just asked this by a Southerner who said that the word "laugh" sounded like "life" and "ass" sounded like "ice."  She said that she thought the person might be from Virginia.
