I had the same reaction/thought yesterday, but if you write and pronounce it
"twaddle" it doesn't really fit into the category of words that sound dirty
but aren't. Only a crisp "twattle" pronunciation with distinct Ts would
qualify for that, IMHO.

I noticed that yesterday's Anu Garg's Word A Day post (the theme this week
is "words that sound dirty but aren't", e.g. nudum pactum, titubation, cock
of the walk) was for "twattle", which I had always thought was "twaddle".
The OED informs me it's pretty much always been both, or either.
Presumably the "twaddle" spelling, although more common, would have been a
bridge too far for the AWAD category in question.
