[Ads-l] emerging Antarctic accent?

Re: temporary accents.

1. My mother was from Whitwell, TN, a small coal-mining town at the south end of the Sequatchie Valley near Chattanooga. It was relatively isolated until WW2 or so, and locals have a strong accent, similar to South Appalachian. By the time I was old enough to notice such things, my mom's accent had faded to more of a generic southern one (she lived as an adult in Nashville TN), and it was clear to me that she did not speak the same as did my cousins etc. who still lived in Whitwell. But when she would go home for a visit, she'd pick the Whitwell accent back up in a day or so, and on return to Nashville, it would revert back to generic southern over the next week or so.

2. When I was a sophomore in college (UT Knoxville), my dorm roommate was from Alexandria VA and had a strong Tidewater accent. Sometime in the middle of the first quarter, I came home for the weekend and both of my parents commented on how I had picked up some of his prononciations.

A question for me would be whether, when the scientists leave Antarctica, they retain the new accent or if it is a phenomenon specific to the place and circumstances. They are, after all, adult speakers of some other dialect/language when they arrive.

That came up on the very first episode of Lingthusiasm:
