These are so rare in print that it might be of interest to see another one:

1858 _Evening Post_ (NYC) (Oct. 4) 2: Infantry garrisons are less
expensive, but they are totally useless.... Both here [Ft. Laramie]
and at [Ft.] Kearny the Indians have driven off the government herd in
broad daylight, and in full view of the "doughboys," who could only
watch them from their barracks, because they had no animals with which
to follow in pursuit.
