I remember first encountering it at science fiction con art shows and 
that would have been late 80s all through the 90s into the early 2000s.

I am not sure what would be available archives-wise that would be easily 
searchable. We had artists, of course, identify media for their works. 
It was a big soul-searching moment when we started allowing the sale of 
digital prints at art shows.

I'm trying to think of what organizations might maintain easily 
accessible archive records from their art shows. WorldCon? World 
Fantasy? And then I think I remember some stand alone SF&F art show 
events . . .
