Thank you so much for that, Garson. I missed the OED entry under lightening n. I also wonder why it is defined as a feeling rather than the actual dropping down of the uterus, given that the example states clearly that the uterus drops. I also see that there is another term given in the 1870 source, the child “falls”. It stands to reason that people would have been talking about this since, well, forever. So there must have been one or some similar terms in every stage and dialect of English.

The OED has the following under "lightening":

2 b. The feeling experienced by a pregnant woman after the uterus
descends into the pelvis and lessens pressure within the abdomen,
occurring some days before the onset of labour; (also) the process of
descent of the uterus into the pelvis.

change is familiar to all childbearing women, to whom it is known as
‘the lightening before labour’.

The 2004 citation contains "baby drops".
Here is a citation for “dropping” in the pertinent sense although it
refers to the dropping of the womb instead of the dropping of a baby.
