Yes, it seems as though the clipping is derived from the orthography rather than the phonology, but that’s part of a pattern for pronouncing truncations little understood (at least by me), as also exemplified by “Soash” for “Sociology”, which is never itself pronounced with a palatalized <c>. “Social work” yes, but not “sociology”.
By the same token, the various incarnations of “Natty” for “Natural” (as in Natty Light beer and the others brought up in the thread) ought to be “Natch” or “Natchy”, not “Natty”.
