[Ads-l] "Natty" = 'national champion(ship)'

I remember an interesting clipping of a course name
from my days as a freshman college student (1958-59),
 Its title was Humanities, often clipped to Hum
(pronounced like the verb hum, sometimes with
a humorously added humming sound).

Yes, it seems as though the clipping is derived from the orthography =
rather than the phonology, but that=E2=80=99s part of a pattern for =
pronouncing truncations little understood (at least by me), as also =
exemplified by =E2=80=9CSoash=E2=80=9D for =E2=80=9CSociology=E2=80=9D, =
which is never itself pronounced with a palatalized <c>. =E2=80=9CSocial =
work=E2=80=9D yes, but not =E2=80=9Csociology=E2=80=9D. =20

By the same token, the various incarnations of =E2=80=9CNatty=E2=80=9D =
for =E2=80=9CNatural=E2=80=9D (as in Natty Light beer and the others =
brought up in the thread) ought to be =E2=80=9CNatch=E2=80=9D or =
=E2=80=9CNatchy=E2=80=9D, not =E2=80=9CNatty=E2=80=9D.
