Interesting. In our family, in and around that same year of 1955, “Nova” and “lox” were treated as mutually inconsistent co-hyponyms.  Nova was what we had; lox, also known as “belly lox”, was deemed “too salty”.  An alternative was “chicken carp”, a.k.a. “sable”. That was smoked carp, I assume.  Why “chicken carp” I can’t begin to guess.
