Excellent work finding a 1966 citation, Bill.
Here is a 1962 citation containing the phrase "taking one for the
team" between quotation marks. Interestingly, the domain was not
baseball or football. The domain was track and field.

A runner decided not to push himself and attempt to beat another
runner. Apparently, this somehow helped the team.

Joe probably could have beaten Clark that night, for Lee was seldom
over Long's winning time. He averaged :50.4 as leadoff, man in the
mile relay.

It is impossible to know what went on in Lee's mind that night in the
stretch run, and Joe, himself, probably isn't quite certain. It might
be said that he passed up a golden opportunity, or it might be noted,
on the other hand, that if he could have beaten Clark and didn't it
was a case of 'taking one for the team.
