Here is another excerpt which helps to explain how the loss of a race
by one runner was helpful to the team.

Date: May 10, 1962
Newspaper: The Baytown Sun
Newspaper Location: Baytown, Texas
Article: First and 10
Author: Jimmie Woods (Sports Editor)

[Begin excerpt]
The other incident involved the loss of a race that Joe Lee might have
won. As it turned out, the team probably fared better in the state
finals by six or seven points.
[End excerpt]

Runner Joe Lee did not push himself to beat runner Freddy Clark. Clark
came in second. Lee came in third. Clark qualified for the regional
track meet, and that was good for the overall team.

[Begin excerpt]
It might be said that he passed up a golden opportunity, or it might
be noted, on the other hand, that if he could have beaten Clark and
didn't it was a case of 'taking one for the team.
[End excerpt]
